"Houston, we have a problem!"?.... Fireworks coming up this week?
After almost an hour on the phone with Doug challenging me about my efforts to raise awareness about abuse within the SBC, I was in tears and finally said to him, "I'm going to save you the awkardness of having to ask me to step down and I will step down."
His reply was, "Let's take a few weeks.... " The next day in a meeting with my husband Doug brought up the subject about us stepping down and he [Doug] said, "I told Amy I would think about it, but I've thought about it overnight, and I think it's best that she step down."
What a far cry from saying it was "at their insistence."http://newbbcopenforum.blogspot.com/2013/06/you-may-be-seen-as-fringe.html?m=1

Southern Baptist Leadership Is Lacking
http://stopbaptistpredators.blogspot.com/2013/06/southern-baptist-leadership-is-lacking.html
Jack Graham will be a featured speaker at the Southern Baptist Convention's annual Pastors' Conference on June 9 in Houston. His topic?Leadership. So . . . let's talk a little about the kind of leadership that Jack Graham has shown.
Graham is the senior pastor at the 32,000-member Prestonwood Baptist megachurch in Plano, Texas. It's a church that has been mired in a clergy child molestation cover-up scandal that just won't go away - mainly because the church leadership just keeps digging itself deeper.
For example, last March, Prestonwood officials called the cops on a church member who dared to ask questions about the widely-reported cover-up - an act that only made church leadership look like bullies. And Graham himself refused to comment back in 2011 when WFAA-News first reported the scandal - a refusal that only served to raise more questions. Two years later, with the cover-up scandal still in the news, Graham tried to use Jesus to justify his continued silence on the alleged cover-up - a justification that looked like nothing more than an evasive "cop-out."So this is the kind of leadership that Jack Graham has shown. It's the kind of leadership that declines any transparency and that acts as though it's above accountability. More importantly, it's the kind of leadership that raises disturbing questions about whether church image and crony protection were given priority over kids' safety - and about whether church leadership violated the law in failing to report to the police information about suspected child sex abuse.
Graham's style of leadership on this goes all the way back to the summer of 1989 when Prestonwood church officials received an allegation that the church's youth music minister, John Langworthy, had "acted inappropriately with a teenage student." Amy Smith, a former Prestonwood staff intern who was there at the time, has said that Langworthy "confessed to molesting boys in the church." With Jack Graham at the helm, Prestonwood church officials responded by quietly dismissing Langworthy. They got Langworthy off their own turf, but Langworthy was able to go to work at another Southern Baptist church in Mississippi. Thanks to Amy Smith's extraordinary efforts - and no thanks to Jack Graham - this "cover-up" finally came to light some two decades later. With more victims coming forward, Langworthy pled guilty last January to multiple counts of child molestation. However, because his crimes were concealed for so long, he will serve no prison time. The Southern Baptist Convention has over 100,000 ministers. Yet, this man, Jack Graham, is the minister who gets presented as a model of "leadership" for others to follow - a man who, from reported accounts, kept quiet about a child predator, allowing him easy access to more kids for more than two decades.
I have no doubt but that Graham's style of leadership provides good-sounding sermons to the masses - because the masses certainly show up at his church. And with 32,000 members in his church, I expect that Graham's style of leadership also provides hefty contributions to the Southern Baptist Convention's cooperative program.
But what style of leadership is more important? Leadership that provides impressive preaching and big dollars, or leadership that prioritizes the protection of kids?Apparently, Southern Baptist officials think it's the former and so they present Jack Graham as a "leadership" model. In doing so, the Southern Baptist Convention sends this message: "Clergy sex abuse cover-up? No big deal." ________________________

Together for the Gospel has altered its original statement on the Sovereign Grace Ministries lawsuit. When first posted on May 23, 2013, the statement included this paragraph:
"A Christian leader, charged with any credible, serious, and direct wrongdoing, would usually be well advised to step down from public ministry. No such accusation of direct wrongdoing was ever made against C.J. Mahaney. Instead, he was charged with founding a ministry and for teaching doctrines and principles that are held to be true by vast millions of American evangelicals ..."
Checked on the morning of June 6, it was discovered that two sentences - "No such accusation of direct wrongdoing was ever made against C.J. Mahaney. Instead, he was charged with founding a ministry and for teaching doctrines and principles that are held to be true by vast millions of American evangelicals" -- had been removed from the statement. This is how the new version reads: "A Christian leader, charged with any credible, serious, and direct wrongdoing, would usually be well advised to step down from public ministry. We believe this lawsuit failed that test."
However, the date on the statement remained May 23. No reference to an update was included on the changed statement.

Billy Graham's Grandson Responds to Sovereign Grace Ministries Lawsuit
6 Share
(Photo: SBTS via The Christian Post)C. J. Mahaney, president of Sovereign Grace Ministries, speaks at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011.
By Anugrah Kumar , Christian Post ContributorJune 8, 2013|2:33 pm
Christian radio host Janet Mefferd talked with Boz Tchividjian, evangelist Billy Graham's grandson and founder of Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment, who strongly responded to the silence of evangelical leaders on the Sovereign Grace Ministries lawsuit.
The issue is far from being over, Mefferd said on her show on Thursday, noting that the lawsuit against SGM - filed last November and involving multiple allegations of child abuse as well as conspiracy and cover-up charges - was dismissed due to the expiration of statute of limitations for several of the plaintiffs. But the plaintiffs' attorneys have now filed a motion for reconsideration.C.J. Mahaney, president of SGM until recently, was one of several defendants accused of permitting and covering up the sexual abuse of children in churches that formed part of the ministry
.Janet Mefferd said ordinary Christians have been calling on evangelical leaders to address "American evangelicalism's biggest sex scandal to date." Tchividjian, former chief prosecutor in the Seventh Judicial Circuit's Sexual Crimes Division, responded by saying the response by evangelical leaders led to an "incredible disappointment."
"It's nothing new; I think we've seen this type of response may be in different flavors from other Christians in the past ... including in the Catholic Church," said Tchividjian, professor of law at Liberty University School of Law in Lynchburg, Va."Do we not learn from the past at all?" he asked. "It's been a disappointment probably more than anything else ... knowing that there are many, many hurting Christians out there, survivors of abuse who are left completely abandoned in many ways by the evangelical community."Follow us SGM is an evangelical, Reformed, and charismatic network founded in 1982 that has about 80 member churches, located mostly in the U.S.Regarding The Gospel Coalition's continued silence about the scandal - as the ministry says they are waiting for the court's ruling before they respond - Tchividjian said they are trying to protect the institution and stay out of it.
"The reality is this: since when have evangelicals ever looked to the law in determining whether they should speak about evil?"Tchividjian also mentioned statements by The Gospel Coalition and Together for the Gospel, the leaders of which are partners and friends with Mahaney. The statements, he noted, begin with acknowledgment of how horrible child sexual abuse and cover-up are, but the whole purpose is "supporting a friend of theirs."Mefferd pointed out that Together for the Gospel altered their statement that was first posted on May 23. By June 6, two sentences - "No such accusation of direct wrongdoing was ever made against C.J. Mahaney. Instead, he was charged with founding a ministry and for teaching doctrines and principles that are held to be true by vast millions of American evangelicals" - had been removed. And a paragraph, which read, "A Christian leader, charged with any credible, serious, and direct wrongdoing, would usually be well advised to step down from public ministry.
No such accusation of direct wrongdoing was ever made against C.J. Mahaney. Instead, he was charged with founding a ministry and for teaching doctrines and principles that are held to be true by vast millions of American evangelicals ..." had been changed to: "A Christian leader, charged with any credible, serious, and direct wrongdoing, would usually be well advised to step down from public ministry. We believe this lawsuit failed that test."It's a problem of "transparency and truth, which the Gospel is supposed to be all about," Tchividjian responded, noting the statements have been changed without the public being notified. He went on to say that Together for the Gospel should also indicate that Mahaney was the senior pastor at one of their churches when the offenses allegedly took place and the families were allegedly discouraged from reporting the incidents."I wonder if these statements would have ever been published if C.J. Mahaney had been a pastor of a small country church,"
Tchividjian added. "I just think that ... people see through the fact that this is a friend ... this was sort of a good ole boy network in action ... What should they say ... I think we have to understand that Christian leaders have a spiritual responsibility to shepherd the entire flock, not just one party, and I never read in any of those statements any of these men speak about the need to love and minister and expend themselves in love to these particular 11 families."It is sad, he said, "that somebody who has been abused in the Christian community or is being abused in the Christian community will read these statements and do we think this will propel them to come forward or to remain silent?"Mefferd asked why Christian leaders should take a stand on the issue. "I think the way the church and Christians within the church respond to the darkness that surrounds child sexual abuse, will either draw survivors I've always said either into the arms of Jesus or will propel them away," Tchividjian replied."And I think sadly and tragically what we've seen in the last few weeks is that many have been propelled away. ...
It's so important to speak out because the Gospel - we tell people we believe in the Gospel - and the Gospel is about being liberated, to be transparent, to be truthful and even to be vulnerable. I tell people all the time that God did his most powerful work when Jesus was transparent, naked, and vulnerable on the cross. And so we need to embrace that."The world and survivors are watching, he went on to say. "Survivors are watching and to say listen, we want to approach this issue truthfully, even if it requires some vulnerability on our part that's OK because our identity is not in me or what we do but it's Christ alone that gives us the ability to do that. And ultimately, if we do that, if we take the road of the Good Samaritan that says ... my holy business is not keeping me from getting down into the dirt and demonstrating and expending myself for those who are hurting ... if we can do that I still think there's a lot of hope that a lot of abuse survivors will see the authenticity of the Gospel at work and not just simply a bunch of individuals who are trying to protect a friendship or an institution.
That's not the Gospel."A pastor who was at one time a close adviser to Mahaney recently compared the behavior by the SGM's leadership team, including that of Mahaney, during the fallout after the controversy, to that of President Nixon and his staff during the Watergate scandal of the early '70s. "I also expect C.J., the Leadership Team, the interim Board and the current Board will all get full pardons like Nixon by those who fill their shoes," stated Brent Detwiler. He told The Christian Post in March that as one of the original leaders at SGM, he was considered Mahaney's right-hand man. "Scandals in SGM continue one after another," Detwiler wrote in his blog posted recently."The lawsuit is moving forward. A new polity without biblical sanction will be put into place. Cover-ups will continue. Nothing has changed. It only gets worse. There are no Charles Colsons in this scandalous story," he told CP.Detwiler spoke to CP after about 20 churches decided to no longer be under the direction of SGM due to disputes over the leadership capabilities of Mahaney and its executive board.

(CNN) -- A senior Army officer has been suspended for his alleged mishandling of suspected sexual abuse, an issue that has dogged the U.S. military.
The officer affected is Maj. Gen. Michael T. Harrison, until now the commander of U.S. Army forces in Japan.
"He was suspended due to allegations he failed to properly report and investigate allegations of sexual abuse," Army spokesman George Wright told CNN on Friday.
Wright didn't offer more details, beyond saying that there are no allegations that Harrison himself is guilty of personal misconduct.
In a press release, the U.S. Department of Defense said that the action was taken by Army Secretary John McHugh and Army Chief of Staff Ray Odierno.Obama: Misconducts ripple far and wide President to Pentagon: Stop sexual abuse Sex assault allegations at Naval Academy
Maj. Gen. James C. Boozer, the former deputy commanding general of the U.S. Army Europe, will step in to lead U.S. forces in Japan "until the investigation is complete and the issue resolved," the Pentagon said.
The U.S. military has been hit hard over the issue of sexual assault in its ranks.
Military chiefs oppose removing commanders from sexual assault investigations
The Defense Department earlier this spring reported an estimated 26,000 cases of unwanted sexual contact -- ranging from rape to groping -- in 2012. That was a 35% jump from 2010, the Defense Department said.
The report prompted President Barack Obama, during May 24 commencement exercises at the Naval Academy, to tell graduates, "Those who commit sexual assault are not only committing a crime, they threaten the trust and discipline that makes our military strong."
A number of specific cases have made headlines as well, prompting criticism from within and outside the military.
Among them:
-- An Army sergeant first class assigned to the sexual assault prevention unit at Fort Hood, Texas, is being investigated for alleged sexual assault, pandering, abusive sexual contact and maltreatment of subordinates.
-- In early May, an Air Force officer who worked with an assault prevention unit was charged with sexual battery after being accused of grabbing a woman and groping her buttocks and breasts in a parking lot not far from his Washington office.
-- Three U.S. Naval Academy football players are under investigation in an alleged sex assault involving a female midshipman at an off-campus "football house" party in April 2012, according to a Defense Department official. The victim says she learned from friends and social media that the players claimed to have had sexual intercourse with her while she was intoxicated, her lawyer said.
Harrison joined the U.S. Army in 1980, and since then he has served in numerous capacities throughout that military branch and around the world.
That includes leadership roles with the 10th Mountain Division and the Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan. He rose to his post as commanding general of U.S. forces in Japan and of I Corps (Forward) in October 2010, according to his Army bio. -

Leaders of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, are writing officials with the Southern Baptist Convention hoping for a chance to address their annual convention which begins this weekend. SNAP leaders say that congregants and clergy often "immediately and publicly rally for an accused child molester instead of keeping an open mind and urging anyone with information to come forward."
Then, SNAP contends, "Victims, witnesses and whistleblowers are frightened or depressed and stay silent. And as a result, all too often, those who commit and conceal child sex crimes walk free, remain hidden, and hurt others.
"The group cites three congregations at which it says church employees or board members publicly rallied or are rallying behind accused wrongdoers: Prestonwood Baptist Church in Texas, Sovereign Grace Ministries in Maryland, and The Richmond Outreach Center in Virginia.
"Many Baptist pastors offer their staff and their flocks absolutely no training on how to act when church folks are accused of abuse," said Amy Smith, Houston SNAP Director "Even worse, many times ministers themselves take insensitive or hurtful actions, by backing the accused and intimidating the accusers."
"Southern Baptist officials steadfastly refuse to take any real steps to protect children from child molesting clergy," said David Clohessy, SNAP Executive Director. "So the very least they could do would be to teach people how to make it easier, not harder, for child sex abuse victims to speak up and report criminals."A civil lawsuit accuses Rev. C.J. Mahaney of the Sovereign Grace Ministries of refusing to report suspected child sex crimes to police.
Among the prominent Protestant officials who have expressed publicly support for Mahaney are Rev. Mark Dever (senior pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, DC), Rev. Albert Mohler (Southern Baptist seminary president),and Rev. Ligon Duncan (pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, Mississippi).
Devers and Mohler are scheduled to speak to the SBC conference next week.Baptist officials who SNAP considers to have acted in appropriately regarding the Prestonwood controversy include Rev. Jack Graham (past president of the Southern Baptist Convention and now head pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church) and Rev. Neal Jeffrey (associate pastor at Prestonwood)."These men should be chastised and disciplined, not held up as models," Clohessy said.
"We know SBC officials will claim our request is 'too late,'" said Smith. "And we admit we might have acted more promptly. But we also know that 'where there's a will, there's a way.' If SBC officials really want to help catch child molesters and protect kids, they'll make a few adjustments and give us a chance to speak."
A copy of SNAP's letter, sent today by email to five Baptist officials, is below:June 7, 2013Rev. Fred LuterPresident, Southern Baptist Convention[email protected] , 504-488-8488 ext 123
Dear Rev. Luter:We are deeply troubled, in a number of ways, with how local SBC churches - and the SBC itself - deal with clergy sex abuse and cover up cases. Our concerns are widely-known and long-standing, and it's likely not productive to re-hash them all here. But as best we can tell, we've never raised this particular issue nor made this particular request of the SBC. And while we realize this may seem like short notice to you, we also realize that usually "where there's a will, there's a way.
"We are very upset at how church officials and congregants respond when child sex abuse allegations surface against Baptist ministers, volunteers and employees. All too often, clergy and congregants immediately and publicly rally for an accused child molester instead of keeping an open mind and urging anyone with information to come forward. In response, all too often, victims, witnesses and whistleblowers with information are then frightened or depressed and stay silent instead of reporting what they know or suspect about child sex crimes.
And as a result, all too often, those who commit and conceal child sex crimes walk free, remain hidden, and hurt others.(Recent examples of this hurtful behavior include controversies at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Texas, Sovereign Grace Ministries in Maryland, and The Richmond Outreach Center in Virginia.)So when you meet in Houston next week, we respectfully ask for an opportunity to address the full assembly and share our organization's expertise on how church members and staff should respond when such accusation arise.
We've distilled much of what we've learned about this subject over the past 25 years into a short pamphlet that's posted on our website: http://www.snapnetwork.org/links_homepage/when_priest_accused.htm
It's very hurtful to child sex-abuse victims when people in authority publicly back accused wrongdoers. And it hinders criminal investigations, because it intimidates victims, witnesses and whistleblowers into staying silent. We urge church employees and members to support accused ministers if they must. But do so privately in ways that don't further harm, depress and scare other child sex-abuse victims into keeping silent and thus helping child predators escape detection and prosecution.Child sex crimes are incredibly common place. Very few children or adults can promptly report their suffering.
So very many predators remain free to prey on others. So as responsible adults, we must make it less hard, not more hard, for victims of these heinous crimes and cover ups to step forward, get help, expose wrongdoing, protect others and start healing. In light of this, again, we are asking the SBC board?? to let one or two of us speak to the entire convention next week about how SBC staff and individuals SBC church members should respond when accusations of misconduct by church employees and volunteers emerge. We hope to hear from you soon.
